Mason is an 18 year old Cabrillo student. They volunteer at FoodWhat?! Life Lab at UCSC and Bike Santa Cruz County. They love to bike, draw and go to shows. They are passionate about food justice, youth voices, LGBTQ+ rights, racial justice and equality, and supporting survivors of domestic violence. They work at the Bagelry and eat upwards of 2 bagels per day.
Willow goes to AFE. This school allows more independent learning than ordinary schools. Willow is interested in medicine and caregiving. She likes hiking, gardening, pottery and the outdoors! She also likes biking which explains why she works at Bike Santa Cruz County. She enjoys charcoal and graphite drawing, including shading her art work with her hands! Willow loves her dog, IO, and hopes to live with her dog in a tiny house in the future. Willow is passionate about activism and studying the civil rights movement. She writes poetry and songs and loves to sing. Willow has a younger and older brother and has a great relationship with her family. She wants to give what she doesn't need to people who need it more. Willow is queer and open about her sexuality. She is kind and open to everyone around her.
Kaia is a fun spirited, queer and caring freshman at Harbor High. They are 15 years old and a roller derby grom. They enjoy doing multiple forms of art, including knitting, book binding/covering making and jewelry creating. Kaia's favorite school subjects are biology and English. They have colored their hair 17 different times and it is currently dark blue. Kaia has tons of pets, they are two cats, two newts, two chinchillas, five frogs, two turtles, and thirty five fish! Their spirit animal is a butterfly, bright and beautiful. Some social justice topics they really care about are giving people a queer inclusive sex education, the Black Lives Movement and gun control, a large issue in the U.S. today.
Ana is a freshman at PCS. She is 14, 5' 4" and has multi-colored hair. Her spirit animal is a unicorn and her favorite animal is a dog. She is a phenomenal singer and a part of the school choir. She loves to knit, keep up with current politics and binge Netflix. She loves musicals, specifically Book of Mormon, Phantom of the Opera and Dear Evan Hansen. She is a wonderful person and makes people smile just from by being in her presence.
Jessica is a Santa Cruz High student, activist and athlete. She spends a lot of her time swimming and is on the Santa Cruz High swim team. She enjoys creating realistic charcoal drawings and getting her hands dirty with ceramics. She hopes to one day to have a career that allows her to do art, possibly as an art teacher. She believes that fulfilling one's passions is much more important that the state of one's income.
She believes gender stereotyping appearance and fashion doesn't accurately portray the identities of many including herself. As an activist she stands for feminism, the LGBTQ+ community, and gun control. Family is an important aspect of her life and she values the unique connections she has with each of them.
Vincent is a 17 year old student at Delta High School, a charter school in conjunction with Cabrillo. Vincent is in his second semester of ballet at Cabrillo. He heads to work at Shampooches, a dog wash, in his Blue 1991 camry. In his free time, he likes to play ukelele, write sad poems, make pins and draw aliens, dogs and characters in his flowers in their heads. Vincent has been with Subjects to Change for 3 years and cares deeply about mental health, trans rights and artistic expression.
Quentin is a junior at PCS who loves to bike, take film photos of friends, and paint pretty ladies. She enjoys exploring new places, thrifting, hiking at Henry Cowell, listening to tunes and getting trashed by waves at the beach. Quentin is passionate about art and social justice issues like gun control, intersectional feminism, racial equality and LGBTQ+ rights and representation. She also believes strongly in addressing global warming to protect the beautiful earth and environment. Quentin is a Leo, likes physics and math, and hopes someday soon to find herself studying engineering or architecture.
Teresa is an 18 year old student at PCS. She enjoys documenting memories through candid photos, videos, voice memos, black pen sketches, memoirs and poetry. She likes to run, swim and dance. She enjoys listening to a wide range of music, especially hip hop and funk. She loves to stargaze, listen to the sound of thunder and spend as much as time as possible outside (especially on hot sunny days). She values deep conversations, meeting new people and quality time with friends and family. She believes in the power of youth voices, using art to bring awareness towards issues like climate change and gun control, and creating the change we want to see in our community. She believes in greater representation for women, the LGBTQ+ community and colored people.
Lucy is an 18 year old rock climber, singer, traveller and artist. She has lived in Santa Cruz her whole life and graduated from Santa Cruz High School this year. She's been an intern at the MAH for 3 years and works at New Leaf. Her friends call her a "loose vegan", and wishes that her life didn't require her to wear shoes as much as it does. She thinks that addressing environmental issues right now is incredibly important because addressing social issues wouldn't matter if we're all dead. She also believes in making sure everyone has equal access to information. She'll be spending most of next year in Prague and Australia.
